Pianist, pedagogue and performer Gillian has played the piano all her life. As a pedagogue, she believes in building good musical foundations, working with students according to their learning style. “Each person has a unique set of likes and strengths”, she remarks. Listening and singing are a big part of her lessons, as she believes in using the instrument we were born with - our voice. She recorded her solo debut album in Seattle, Washington - a compendium of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms. She also believes in collaborating with other musicians which improves musicality. In May 2019, she performed a Brahms violin sonata together with a fellow violin teacher.
Aside from teaching adults and children, Gillian has also been involved in planning the last two Performers Festivals with the S'pore Music Teachers' Association. From marketing, registrations to hosting international adjudicators, Gillian oversaw a very successful Festival.
She received her Bachelor of Arts in piano from Taylor University, followed by a Masters in Piano Pedagogy & Performance from Southern Methodist University. Aside from music, Gillian appreciates good design, the arts in all its forms, other cultures and a good laugh.
We sat down with Gillian and had a chat after one of her piano classes.
How did you decide on a career in music and teaching?
The script was already written. All I needed to do was follow it.
What does music mean to you?
It’s a universal language not using words which opens up of all kinds of different worlds.
What kind of music do you listen to? Any favourites?
A bit of everything. Mainly Jazz & Classical music.
How do you inspire your love of music with your students?
By connection and the use of the imagination.
Do you have any advice for prospective students?
Don't be afraid to start something new that gives joy. I have yet to meet someone who has regretted picking up an instrument. In the long run, your brain will thank you for making music.
